In the Proclaimers book, page 40 they write:
Stirrings of Watchfulness
In the 19th century, though, the religious climate led to stirrings of
Christian watchfulness. As a result of Bible research on the part of some
clergymen and Bible scholars, such teachings as the immortal sod, eternal
torment after death, predestination, and the Trinity were restudied. In addition,
some students of the Bible were closely examining Bible prophecies
pertaining to the last days. Consequently, various groups of persons
began thinking seriously about the Lord's promised return.
William Miller predicted the return of Christ in
visible form in 1843 or 1844. The German theologian
J. A. Bengel set the date for 1836; the Irvingites in Engl&
dlooked first to 1835, then 1838,1864, and 1866.
There was a Mennonite group in Russia that looked
/ first to 1889, then to 1891.
So why not relegate Russell to the level of these other bible scholars, and say that the true "truth" came sometime later.
That way, they could disassociate themselves from a lot of the now embarrassing things that Russell said.
hello wounderfull people, i would like to thank everyone for they help before, but i still need moral support, i have made my mind up and i want to thanks a member of the aussie team olympic team for responding to my email.
it really means a lot for me when i don't have any real friends when a olympic athlete responds to your email and cares.
she gave me good advice and told me it's possible even thought my situation is hard, that really gave me hope and it was that push that i need to start thinking seriously.
Do you check your PMs?
i wonder what will happen if i just call one of the "sisters" and say that i don't want to attend meetings anymore?
any ideas anyone?.
Facebook is a wonderful thing. People LOVE finding old friends.
Good luck, and keep us informed.
607 and 1914 never really interested me.. is it perchance just man-made chronology?.
my faith hinges squarely on the messiah,.
not something that happened to zedekiah.. 2520 years or 25 years or 20 years.
Hi snowbird.
Ray Franz' book crisis of conscience , has an interesting chapter "predictions and presumption", which deals with the history of the 2520 years thing.
It was John Aquila Brown, 50 years before Russell, who started thinking that way.
NHBarbour, a 7th day adventist, started publishing a magazine, pointing to 1914, and Russell, seeing it, adopted the same idea.
Without getting too bogged down in studying, which I dont particulaly like ( not got the time),
its interesting to wiki "Second Great Awakening"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Great_Awakening
It seems that in the USA, there were a lot of people looking for the 2nd coming of Christ........
and ended up searching for signs and secret codes. DAN BROWN would have been in his element.

None of my family is JW, thank God!
Why not start spending more and more time with your family?
Could you have friends in common with them?
Friends ARE precious. I'm talking about REAL friends, not jw friends.
so dont expect to have loads of them, or you will be disappointed.
For myself, it was my work colleagues who helped out wonderfully at first.
But that was just a temporary boost, that was important, but which faded.
The rest was up to me. I had to go out and FIND friends. It is an active passtime.
Friends dont come to us, we have to go to them.
Just read your last posting, so I think I know why you feel like you do. (at least in part)
I had the same experience a few years ago. It lasted almost four years.
I live a long way away, but we talk again on the phone now and see each other from time to time.
I try to keep it to a minimum myself now, to avoid the "when are you going to come back" line.
It does hurt, but our mothers are a victim, just as much as we are.
There is little we can do:
return, (but it will be a cold day in hell when I do that )
or accept the situation and get on with our own (short) lives.
Good luck. We do have a great compassion for your feelings here.
firstly, i'm a study who initially believed every word of the jw's.
figured "no other religion takes the time and effort to help people understand the bible by publishing the watchtower and the other literature" not realizing that all it does is pick and choose scriptures to suit whatever sentence they'd just written, which can be done using any book, not just the bible.
i felt foolish, after that.. .
Hi roxanesophia.
It seems clear that you want to stop your study.
But:
I have little doubt that i want to stop studying, but i feel bad for wasting someone's time.
Dont feel bad. You didnt ask for them to call on you.
She probably really believes that it is Satan that has gotten hold of you. Well thats her problem.
It has already been said: jws are not the only ones who believe that.
Go ahead with your life. Once you have taken the plunge, you'll feel super.
Come back and tell us about how good you feel.

If new converts were told the entire truth and possible consequences of being baptised a JW before they started their Bible studies, would new converts choose to continue with their Bible studies?
I imagine a government health warning, such as found on cigarette packets.
OUTLAW, maybe you could come up with an image to use.
hi guys,.
i used to have a copy of the flock book but no longer.
i went to the same link as i downloaded before and it's no longer working, pulled down by big brother, no doubt.
Check your PM.
